About SSR
AS THE STORY GOES...
How Saddle Sore Riders got its start
As the story goes, over a quarter of a century ago, a group of friends went out riding every Sunday and since they were from different areas in Norco, they decided to meet at a central location which turned out to be the Saddle Sore Saloon on Sixth Street. The Saloon was closed on Sunday's so they met in the parking lot and took off from there...
After several months of meeting and riding, the group discussed forming a riding club. Art and Darlene, the then-owners of the Saddle Sore Saloon, wanted to become riders and offered the use of the Saddle Sore Saloon as a place to have monthly meetings. The group agreed that they should call themselves the Saddle Sore Riders since that was where they met when riding.
The club was officially formed in December 1985 with 20 charter members. SSR held its first official Poker Ride shortly thereafter to raise money to help out a fellow Norconian who had some health issues and medical bills. As of today, the only remaining charter members that are still members of the club are Jan, Phil, Gary, and Johann. And, as "they" say, "the rest is history," with the club now boasting approximately 100 members!
MEETINGS
Our General Membership meetings are held on the 1st Sunday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at the Norco American Legion Post 328, (3888 Old Hamner Rd, Norco, CA 92860) located near the corner of 6th Street and Old Hamner Road in Norco. The American Legion offers breakfast for a nominal cost.
ABOUT OUR RIDES
Most of our rides are in town, so if your horse lives in Norco you don't need to trailer. However, if you do need to trailer in, we will try to make accommodations for your rig.
Food and beverages are offered at most rides for your enjoyment at a nominal cost.
We also host several out-of-town rides, such as a Memorial Day ride, and Heartbar. Most of our rides are well attended and on occasion we have had over 100 horses/riders. But, don't let that scare you, our events are well organized and staged. Your safety and enjoyment are extremely important to us. Our rides include Outriders and security members at our stops.
Besides trail riding we also represent SSR in the Norco parades, we sponsor several events for Norco's Horseweek, host a Christmas Dinner-Dance, and much more. You don't need to have a horse to be a Saddle Sore member as we have plenty of rides and events that two-footed members can participate in!
As you can tell, our calendar (see the calendar page and the flyers page) is loaded with events and increases each year so that you can choose from a variety of fun events. Come on down to one of the General Membership meetings to listen and watch -- you may join before you leave that day!! Annual membership fees are $25.00 for an individual or $35.00 for a family with children under 18 years old all residing at the same address.
