Taco day at the American
Legion – Saturday, July 12th –
Steve Deever chaired July’s taco day at the American
Legion. Steve would like to thank Pat Reiley, Sandy
Reiley, Jana Dorr, Jerry Dennis, Joyce Goodman, LJ
McDaniel, Randi Verin, and Cindy Olson for making
the club $145 and providing Legionnaires and SSR
members an enjoyable afternoon and good food. This
event happens every month on the second Saturday.
Next one is scheduled for August 9th and
Steve is also heading the cooking crew for that
one. If you can help out, contact Steve at
951-735-2876. If you want to eat then come down to
the Legion between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. for some great
tacos for only $1!
Heart Bar – July 11
through July 21 – Chairpersons Dick and
Lynda Wheeler. The weather was great, except
for some rain. However, the rain kept it cool and
the trails dust-free. Wet corrals caused some
people to move their horses to a new one daily
(Kenny had to clean six by the end of the week).
The potluck dinner and the silent auction were held
under a motor home awning the first Saturday evening
but it all went well. Sunday morning the real
diehard riders saddled in the rain, rode in the
rain, unsaddled in the rain, and had a great time
doing it. It only rained for a few hours here and
there and when it cleared it was beautiful and the
riding was fantastic! Heart Bar is one of the best
riding areas that can be used by equestrians. There
are trails for everyone; meadows, roads, moderate,
and some real hairy ones, so there is some type of
riding for almost all who won’t fall off a kitchen
chair. The reason, aside from lack of
transportation, the turnout for the outing was so
small is beyond me. It is one of those places that
bikers, people campers, and others will take over if
the equestrian users fail to use it. Adverse
weather had some part in the mass exodus (I guess
your horse appreciated you taking him from 70
degrees to 100 degrees back in Norco). For those
that came and stayed the weather was great, cool,
cloudy, no dust, and all the birds were out (a bear
too). We played some cards, read books, rode
horses, and just had a real good time. Many thanks
to Kenny and Carolyn Provencio for leading some
great rides and thanks to those that came. Hope you
enjoyed the riding, the weather, and the
camaraderie. We sincerely hope for a better turnout
next year and that you Saddle Sore Riders do your
part in keeping this one of your regular outings.
Champagne and City Lights
Ride – Saturday, July 26. Chairpersons –
Randi Verin and Tracy Penna. Tracy and Randi would
first like to thank Debi Schleuning for pre-riding
and thinking of such an awesome theme for an event –
clearly it was a good one with 105 riders turning
out! A really big thanks to Carolyn and Kenny
Provencio for running a very classy bar and doing
such a great job! A huge thanks to Kevin Whitaker
for helping with pre-planning, equipment hauling,
problem solving, and he was literally the first one
at Ingall’s to set up, and the very last to leave
that night. We really appreciated all he did to
help. Another big thanks to Richard Stone who was
great with pre-planning and a big help during the
ride. Big thanks to Glenn and Jana Dorr for helping
with ground crew and who stepped up to haul the
port-a-potties mid stream (ha, ha). A very big
thanks to Mickey & Bryan Nichols of Filippi’s for
donating all the ice and appetizers (most of which
made it to the ride). Thanks to those that brought
food – Tammy Kapec, Katy Taylor, Hollie Piotrowski,
Jana Dorr, Ann Marie Knudson, Carol, Shorty, and
Joyce Goodman. Sincere thanks to our ground crew:
Kenny & Robert Petry, Shorty, Susan Turpin, Glenn &
Jana Dorr, Anneliese Maben, Haley Kapec, Cheryl
Vickrey, Van Jarvis, Pat & Sandy Reiley, Sue
Britton, Billy Johnson, Joyce Goodman, Steve Deever,
Katy Taylor, and Gary & Andrea Turner. Trail Boss:
Randi Verin, Outriders: Jim Turpin, Kevin Whitaker,
Charlene Hall, Bruce Patton, Shelly Montgomery,
Drag: Claude & Renee Conant.

General “Stuff”
Dick and Lynda Wheeler.
For 20 years Dick and Lynda Wheeler hosted Heart Bar
in the San Bernardino National Forest. This event
has seen its ups and downs but has remained a club
favorite – at least for those that have attended.
The Wheelers have always done an outstanding job and
every year have tried to think of new things (like
the silent auction) to help subsidize losses when
all the corrals are not filled. Dick and Lynda know
the trails up in the mountains like the backs of
their hands and thanks to them many of the trails
are named such as Walt’s Highway, Disneyland Trail,
and Turtle Rock. They’ve established riding for
every level of rider – easy, short, hard, long,
hairy, and just plain relaxing. If you’ve never
ridden in the mountains then it’s indescribable. It
always comes when it’s 100 plus degrees in Norco and
the crisp, clean, beautiful air of the mountains
takes your breath away.
Dick and Lynda are passing the torch to Kenny and
Carolyn Provencio. They will have tough shoes to
fill but they too are well seasoned Heart Bar
aficionados and are honored to take over.
Thank you Dick and Lynda for your service with this
SSR event and hopefully the tradition continues but
it’s up to the members of this club to keep this
event alive.
